Third Annual Working Meeting
Toronto, Candada
May 8th - 10th, 2011
Executive Summary of the Meeting
The Second Annual Working Meeting of the International Collaboration on Participatory Health Research (ICPHR) was held at the University of Toronto in Toronto, Canada on May 8‐10, 2011. The Catholic University of Applied Sciences (Berlin, Germany), the Wellesley Institute (Toronto, Canada), and the University of Alberta (Edmonton, Canada) hosted the meeting in partnership with the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). The twenty‐six participants attending the meeting included academic researchers and representatives from governmental and non‐ governmental organizations working in participatory health research in nine different countries (Canada, Germany, United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Portugal,USA, Ireland and France).
The goals for the Second Annual Working Meeting were:
The majority of time was spent in the Action Groups, with each group formulating concrete work plans to actualize the priorities set for the
upcoming year. The tasks identified by the Scope and Patterns of PHR Action Group include: mapping existing PHR training courses internationally, developing a series of theory building workshops to take place in various countries and conducting a bibliometric analysis of the published literature on PHR. The Making the Case Action Group identified the following tasks: developing thought pieces and an FAQ about the impacts of PHR, conducting a literature review on the impact of PHR, and developing a fact sheet on the impact of PHR for policymakers. The Database Action Group identified actions in helping to develop a PHR database. The first step will be to ask ICPHR members to submit two papers they consider exemplify PHR and to submit six PHR publications that have most influenced their work with an explanation of their selections.
The ICPHR website (www.icphr.org) was launched this past year and is still undergoing construction. The current site was presented and suggestions for further development were discussed. The participants at the meeting discussed the place and time for the next Annual Working Meeting. The membership agreed that the meeting should be moved outside of North America. Ideally the next ICPHR working meeting would be located in a country in the southern hemisphere. This would be a way of engaging more practitioners and researchers from different parts of the world. However, the host country must be able to access funding to support the meeting and be relatively accessible for people travelling from other countries. Portugal, Brazil and Mexico were identified as potential host countries.
