This position paper is a timely and compelling call to action for funders who want their investments in health research to achieve real, sustainable impact. It clearly outlines how participatory health research (PHR) offers not only scientific value, but also meaningful social returns—increased trust, community empowerment, and research that resonates with those it aims to serve.

Participatory health research represents a significant methodological advancement in contemporary health sciences, particularly in its capacity to bridge the gap between academic inquiry and community-based knowledge. A funding framework that meaningfully supports participatory approaches is essential for ensuring not only scientific rigor, but also social relevance and ethical accountability. By prioritizing inclusive research design, long-term stakeholder engagement, and equitable resource allocation, funding organizations can foster research processes that generate context-sensitive and sustainable outcomes. Position papers such as this contribute to clarifying the structural conditions necessary for participatory health research to move beyond symbolic inclusion toward genuine co-creation and transformative impact.
