Training in Participatory Health Research
Project Lead: Prof. Irma Brito
An International Course for Participatory Researchers
How can I improve my capacity to do PHR research?
In recent years there has been a movement in several countries to increase the participation of citizens in health research by including them over the course of studies. There are an increasing number of academic and researchers who engage study participants in a more active way, as compared to traditional interviews or surveys, in order to improve the quality of the research and to promote knowledge transfer. Building capacity for partnerships between various people from inside and outside academic institutions is a complex activity which requires an ethical stance and extensive networking.
A goal of the ICPHR is to promote the use of participatory research through competency building, considering PHR as a research approach, not a research method (ICPHR 2013). Participation as a research approach means that those people whose life or work is the subject of the research, are involved in the research process since the beginning until the dissemination phase. The principle of participation guides the entire research process. ICPHR training courses aim to build capacity on the design, implementation and sharing of PHR research. Look here for training courses in your country or among the ICPHR members in other countries.
